Matthew Weis July 20, 2015 IT Career Lab, Training, Workforce 0 Having grown up in a small farming group in rural Wisconsin, my first formal summer job as a budding 13 year old boy was to detassel corn for the native farm that specialised in seed hybridization. Not being especially involved in the agricultural aspect of the job, I chose to detassel because of the short cash ($three.35 an hour, which felt like $50 per hour to my 13-12 months-old self), as a result of I wished to spend time exterior with my associates, and since my dad told me I needed to work. If you talk with anyone who has detasseled before, you’ve probably heard that it’s extremely tough work…and it's. Corn leaves may be surprisingly sharp, and between the filth, mud, blood and occasional wedgies, walking by way of a mile long corn field for 10 hours a day oftentimes doesn’t make for one of the best teenage recollections. The skills I gained over the course of the three summers’ I was employed as a detasseler supplied me with a strong foundation which I constructed off of with each subsequent job I held â€" always studying, at all times rising (corn pun intended). In urban Chicago, detasseling isn’t an option for many people who are in the market for his or her first job, however the metropolis does provide a wealth of other occupations, many of that are in excessive progress industries that may lay a strong career path for the following generation of staff. Although the work is completely different, the abilities and work ethic gained by taking part within the workforce at a younger age is actually invaluable.
